QUESTION

How many matches is “too many” for a regular season? How many matches is “too many” in light of the other domestic and international competitions that occur throughout the year? How many matches are too few?

ANSWER  

30 regular season matches is the bare minimum.  38 matches is the absolute maximum that our calendar could accommodate.

Once we have our conferences established, what competitive structure should we implement? Do we want to keep playoffs? If so, how many teams do we allow into the playoff bracket? Speaking of playoff brackets, should we have two-leg or single-leg competition, and how long should the playoffs take?

If MLS had a theme for the first few weeks of 2018, it would have been: What is the SuperDraft and why does it matter?  A considerable portion of that theme would, ironically, be devoted to convincing fans that it actually does matter, while also trying to hide the slightly anxious tone in which the argument is conveyed.  Fortunately, the SuperDraft “SHOULD” have a long and immensely important future in shaping the US soccer landscape --- but only if changes are made.
