Facing one of the top teams in the East, the 2’s absorbed heavy pressure, showed fight defensively, and still left Matthews needing more from the attack.
Atlanta United 2 were frustrated on the road Friday night, held scoreless in a 2-0 loss to Eastern Conference leaders Crown Legacy FC in MLS NEXT Pro action.

Playing Crown Legacy in back-to-back road matches, albeit 12 days apart, Atlanta United 2 once again faced a difficult assignment: trying to slow one of the league’s more prolific attacks while dealing with a physical and frustrating side that has set the pace in the East early in 2026.
Jose Silva’s lineup featured Jono Ransom in goal behind a back line of Dominic Chong Qui, Mohammed Cisset, Matthew Senanou, and Daniel Chica. DD Sibrian and Adyn Torres sat behind an attacking midfield group of Cameron Dunbar, Santi Pita, and Enzo Dovlo, with Liam Butts up top.
For Crown Legacy and Kevin Sawchak, Graham Syrett got the start in goal. The back line included Ashton Kamdem, Andrew Johnson, MLS veteran Henry Kessler, and Will Cleary. Baye Coulibaly and Daniel Longo anchored the midfield behind Rodolfo Aloko, Adrian Gutierrez, and Nathan Richmond, with Hugo Mbongue leading the line.
Crown Legacy wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. In the first minute, Nathan Richmond sent in a cross from the right that caromed off both Daniel Chica and Hugo Mbongue before dropping back toward Jono Ransom. Mbongue reacted first and slotted the loose ball past Ransom for the opener.
Crown found more joy down the wings early, and Richmond nearly added another in the sixth minute when he hit the far post. The recycled play led to another shot that sailed over the bar. Ransom then had to come up big in the 18th minute as Atlanta United 2 were beginning to settle into the match. Andrew Johnson hit the post, Chica sent the rebound up into the air, and Ransom recovered quickly to make a high claim and end the danger.
Atlanta United 2 did find some rhythm in the middle of the first half. Santi Pita, Cameron Dunbar, and Enzo Dovlo combined well down the left in the 23rd minute, and that trio linked up twice more over the next three minutes. The final product was still missing, though, with one shot and one clearance from inside the 18-yard box denying the visitors a breakthrough. Before halftime, Dominic Chong Qui and Cameron Dunbar also forced Graham Syrett into another save.
The lone goal stood at the break, but Crown Legacy still piled up 19 first-half shots, with three on target, compared to Atlanta United 2’s three shots and one on target. Even with that volume, Crown produced only two big chances. Atlanta United 2, meanwhile, had twice as many final-third entries in the first half, 31-15, but could not turn that territory into enough meaningful looks at goal.
The second half brought an even steeper challenge against a team built to frustrate opposing attacks and protect a lead.
Crown Legacy doubled the advantage early after the restart when Henry Kessler headed a Nathan Richmond corner into the far-side netting. A third nearly followed a few minutes later, but Matthew Senanou blocked the first effort inside the box before the follow-up header drifted wide.
Silva responded shortly afterward with four substitutions, and the fresh legs nearly provided an immediate spark. Arif Kovac had a chance inside the Crown Legacy penalty area, and Patrick Weah was taken down in the box on the next possession, though play was allowed to continue. Ignacio Suarez-Couri and Enzo Dovlo then worked a ball to the back post for another dangerous look.
Dovlo tried to combine with Moises Tablante, while Weah repeatedly drove at the Crown Legacy defense and helped create several set-piece opportunities for Cameron Dunbar in the second half. The final one drifted wide of the far post in the closing minutes.
Defensively, the 2’s got six saves from Jono Ransom on the night, including four from inside the box. His final stop came late on a breakaway, when he stretched out his left arm to keep the margin at two. He was also credited with winning three of his four duels and recording a successful tackle.
Along the back line, three of the four defenders graded out among the strongest outfield performers for Silva. Mohammed Cisset, making his first start for the 2’s, finished with 13 defensive contributions across six categories, including winning eight of his 16 duels at Matthews.
Crown Legacy continued to show why they have made the most of this four-game homestand, outscoring opponents 15-2 while taking all 12 available points. Atlanta United 2 did manage to hold Crown to its lowest goal total of the young season in the rematch, but they were not able to offer enough going the other way.
The final numbers underscored that imbalance. Crown Legacy outshot Atlanta United 2 by a 32-11 margin, put eight shots on target to Atlanta’s two, and finished with 53 touches inside the opponent’s 18-yard box compared to 16 for the visitors.
The defensive group continued to show progress early in the MLS NEXT Pro season. Now the next step is getting more from the attack away from home.
Next up for Atlanta United 2 is another road match a week from Friday in Fort Lauderdale against Inter Miami CF II. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
