The road trip to Soldier Field was a chance for Atlanta United to learn and apply the lessons spoken at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground. The response was aggressive out of the blocks, but the Five Stripes had to approach the match differently than anticipated.

Before the match, it was determined Alexey Miranchuk would be held out of the lineup after experiencing muscle pain earlier Saturday. The decision was to hold him out entirely because of upcoming schedule compression.

In turn, the Atlanta United lineup had Lucas Hoyos in net. The backline: Baez, Mihaj, Gregersen, and Jacob. The midfield: Cooper Sanchez returning to the starting XI, joined by Tristan Muyumba and a returning Matias Galarza. The pressure up front came from Saba (in for Miranchuk), Miggy, and Latte Lath.

For Chicago, Chris Brady started in net. Andrew Gutman lined up on the backline with Mbekelezi Mbokazi, Jack Elliott, and Leonardo Barroso. The midfield had Robin Lod, Dje D'Avilla, and Anton Saletros. Up front, the Fire had Phillip Zinckernagel, Maren Haile-Selassie, and Jonathan Bamba.

The Five Stripes were challenged early as Lucas Hoyos made two saves with Jonathan Bamba making his presence felt immediately. Saba returned the favor in the sixth minute with a shot that was deflected wide of the near post. The attack down the right wing created enough pressure to produce four United corner kicks by the 8th minute.

Chicago got on the board first in the 13th with a run down the right. Zinckernagel sent a cross into the 18. The ball went off Jonathan Bamba and found Haile-Selassie for a shot through traffic and a 1-0 advantage.

United almost equalized a minute later as Tomas Jacob sent a shot just past the post, and another chance was cleared off the line by Mbokazi on a header by Stian Gregersen. Chris Brady misjudged a looping ball past the far post. Saba chipped the ball back in front of net for the Gregersen chance.

The response by Atlanta United was good being down a goal. The pressure created early and the pacing were consistent with the opening minutes at Soldier Field.

But as the first half rolled on, Chicago had a few opportunities as the Atlanta United defense grew more chaotic in its approach. Andrew Gutman hit the post with a shot in the 39th, the rebound eventually cleared outside of the 18. On their next possession, Jonathan Bamba hit the underside of the crossbar.

At the break, shots stood 9-7 in favor of Chicago after an early 6-2 advantage for the visitors. Eight of Chicago's nine shots were inside the 18.

Atlanta United needed to get back to their defensive efforts from the early portions of the match in the second 45 and keep creating offensively in a way that had the Fire on their heels.

United had a couple of chances in the early parts of the second half -- Tomas Jacob with a shot right at Chris Brady and a header off a corner by Enea Mihaj that went right at the keeper -- as the margin stayed at 1-0.

The energy from Atlanta was consistent in the second half but the only thing missing was a goal. The shots advantage swung back to Atlanta at 13-11 with 20 minutes to go. Chicago added another save to Hoyos's numbers with a point-blank shot with 17 to go.

Acting Head Coach Jorge Thieler made a triple change with 12 minutes remaining, as Brennan, Amador, and Togashi entered for Saba, Baez, and Latte Lath.

Lucas Hoyos came up with another big save in the 82nd minute as the match got stretched by Atlanta. The frantic nature continued as Chicago had an opportunity, but Tomas Jacob made a long run to stop a shot in the 87th minute from the edge of the 18.

One last rush by Atlanta United resulted in blocked attempts inside the Chicago six. Chris Brady made a last-ditch save on the goal line on Cayman Togashi, and full time gave the Fire their fourth win of the season. Atlanta showed a better response and more creation than in other matches to date but still has only one win in 2026.

CONCLUSION: The effort given by United was one of the best over a full 90 minutes this season. At the end of the night, the only element missing was the equalizer in a one-goal loss. Atlanta outplayed Chicago on the whole in the second half but still returns to Mercedes-Benz Stadium without any points to show for it.

Atlanta United out-shot Chicago 20-18 (6 on target to 3). Eleven of those shots were inside the 18-yard box, on 15 fewer touches inside the box on the night (41-26). It was the best road performance of the season -- if not across all seven matches in 2026.

Next up is the Open Cup Round of 32 at Finley Stadium in the midweek against Chattanooga FC of MLS NEXT Pro.
