The 2026 home season for Atlanta United started off with an uphill climb and finished with a 3-2 loss in their 2026 season opener in front of an announced crowd of 53, 862.
A short-handed Real Salt lake side came to town down seven anticipated starters as a laundry list of names including Arias, Eneli, Yedlin, Henry, Luna, Olatunji, Piol (now out with an Achilles injury until further notice for RSL head coach Pablo Mastroeni) yielded for a starting XI of Guilavogui, Solans, Hezarkhani, Sanabria, Moisa, Caliskan, Gozo, Engle, Glad, Quinton, and Rafa Cabral in net.
Atlanta United responded with two changes- most notably the start of Alexei Miranchuk on the right of the attack with Almiron and Latte Lath up top. Alzate, Cooper Sanchez, and Tristan Muyumba had the midfield while the back line was Baez, Berrocal, Mihaj, and Jacob with Lucas Hoyos in net.
United's offense had a few moments early as a through ball that found Latte Lath forced a Cabral save in the 8th minute followed by Miranchuk and Miggy together in the 13th. An errant Elias Baez pass forced a Lucas Hoyos early save in the 14th, but coming back the other way, Miranchuk and Latte Lath combined for a flick-idea from Latte Lath that went wide of the far post.
Not to be outdone, in transition, RSL found space behind the back line and a shot from Guilavogui was blocked at the last by Enea Mihaj forcing a corner kick for the visitors.
Speaking of transition, Miguel Almiron was grabbed from behind in center circle by Hezarkhani in the 18th minute. Referee Jon Freeman played advantage as Miggy worked through the jersey pull and almost-take down but his attempt would finish as a corner. Miggy would get another chance combining with Steven Alzate and the eventual shot would go wide of the far post. United would have four shots in the first 21 minutes and would even complete more passes in the first ten minutes at Mercedes-Benz than they did on the road in the first two road matches combined.
A 23rd minute goal with Gilavogui combining with Solans would give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Tristan Muyumba was marking Guilavogui from behind but would only clip him from behind- not enough to stop the rush through the middle. A second goal would go on the board as Hezarkhani would get enough space off is right from Enea Mihaj and place a shot upper-90 at the near post.
Atlanta United would register their first goal of the 2026 season as Cooper Sanchez would find space inside the 18, finding Elias Baez, who would cut a pass back to Alexei Miranchuk for the finish. But the margin would go back to two goals at 3-1 in the 40th minute with Gozo getting behind Juan Berrocal going far side-netting for the result at the half.
The second half would see Atlanta United chasing and would see the debut for Matias Galarza with 30 minutes to go. The Five Stripes would find a second goal from Miranchuk in the 73rd minute as Latte Lath returned the favor and Miranchuk slotted home a shot dribbling past Cabral and the goal line. Two more rushes would follow with no results.
Atlanta United would make substitutions with ten minutes to go and tried to tilt the field in the final sixteen, but the visitors would come away with their first-ever win in Atlanta in club history.
The first in a run of matches at home for Atlanta United would frustrate on a number of fronts and the team would be 0-3 as match Week 4 brings Philadelphia to Mercedes-Benz Stadium next weekend.
