Final Whistle: ATLUTD Leads Early, Loses Lead To New England Late At Mercedes-Benz

The line-up looked different for Atlanta United as their quick homestand continued at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. A New England Revolution side that had not won on the road in 2026 was the midweek visitor.
For the Five Stripes, the biggest question came from head coach Tata Martino earlier in the week. He made the point that chances inside the opponent's 18-yard box had to be converted, and that breaking down opponents in that zone was necessary to keep scoring. The build-up to get there had been successful. The finishing had not.
Lineup changes for Atlanta United included a shift up top. The front line started Saba Lobjanidze, Alexey Miranchuk, and Fafa Picault. The midfield had Will Reilly, Cooper Sanchez, and Matías Galarza. The backline was Pedro Amador, Enea Mihaj, Juan Berrocal, and Matt Edwards. Lucas Hoyos started in net.
For New England: Turner, Sands, Fofana, Kohler, Feingold, Yusuf, Gil, Yow, Turgeman, and Langoni.
Atlanta United found early success attacking down the left side with Pedro Amador finding Cooper Sanchez in the fifth minute. Cooper's header cleared the bar, but it signaled an early trend for the home side on offense.
The defense registered the same kind of early momentum with Matt Edwards and Juan Berrocal forcing turnovers off Revolution possession. Fafa and Cooper Sanchez combined again for another near chance before New England had their first real opportunity in the 14th minute, Luca Langoni firing wide of the target.
The Revolution appeared to score in the 18th minute as Alhassan Yusuf rocketed a ball from outside the Atlanta 18-yard box and past Lucas Hoyos, slightly deflected on its way in. A lengthy VAR review took the advantage away: Dor Turgeman was ruled offside when the shot was taken.
Turgeman was in the line of sight of Hoyos, between the goalkeeper and the ball, and therefore judged to be interfering with play. An Atlanta United defender was positioned in front of Turgeman, but that positioning does not factor into the Laws of the Game in this scenario.
Turgeman tried to atone with a shot in the 27th minute, but it was one of the few moments in the first half New England had any real foothold in possession.
Atlanta United got on the board in the 38th minute. Fafa Picault slammed a rebound past Matt Turner, his sixth different MLS club to score for. Alexey Miranchuk started the play with a looping cross to the back post that Pedro Amador kept alive with a sliding clearance at the far post. Turner saved the initial shot, and Picault was there for the rebound.
The Five Stripes carried a 1-0 lead into halftime with three of the big chances and a 6-2 shot advantage.
New England came out of the break looking to equalize. Matt Edwards conceded a foul just outside the Atlanta 18 five minutes in, but Carles Gil sent the resulting cross well past the far post.
Atlanta chased a second goal with thirty minutes to go. Matías Galarza had the first attempt, a shot from the left side that deflected out for a corner. On the following possession, Miranchuk had an uncontested look from distance; another deflection produced another corner.
With 25 minutes left, Saba, Fafa, and Miranchuk combined again. The Revs survived a shot wide of goal. Five minutes later, Saba sent a free kick just past the near post as Atlanta kept pressing.
New England finally equalized in the 73rd minute. Off a corner, Will Sands beat two Atlanta United defenders to the ball and put it past Hoyos. Five minutes later, an entry pass from Carles Gil deflected into the path of Peyton Miller at the edge of the six. Miller converted for a 2-1 lead, and Atlanta had to chase.
Chances came in the 85th minute and several times in stoppage time, but
Matt Turner made three saves in quick succession to protect the result. All three points went to New England, the first road win for the Revs in 2026.
Atlanta United finished with 21 shots to New England's seven, a 9-4 edge on target, and 37 touches in the final third compared to 11 for the visitors. They controlled most of the match and generated the shots Martino called for. Two moments in five minutes decided it.
United responds quickly, with a road trip to Toronto to face Toronto FC early Saturday afternoon.
