Third Match In A Week Catches Up With Atlanta United in 3-Goal Foxborough Loss

Atlanta United's long week wrapped an hour outside Boston in a place that hadn't been kind to the Five Stripes. In eight all-time matches up north Atlanta United had only won once, with a record of 1-5-2, only scoring seven goals in all matches.
It continued not to be kind as the Revolution sent Atlanta United back home after a 4-1 loss Saturday night.
No Diaz (VISA), Fortune (hamstring), Amador (coach's decision), Jacob (yellow card accumulation), or Santos (calf) for the Five Stripes as Acting Head Coach Jorge Theiler's starting XI had Lucas Hoyos in net. Elias Baez was at Left Back with Stian Gregersen and Junior Alonso as Center Backs. Matthew Edwards was at Right Back.
Tristan Muyumba, Will Reilly, and Cooper Sanchez were the Central Midfielders. Miguel Almiron wore the captain's armband at Left Wing. Fafa Picault was at Center Forward and Alexey Miranchuk was at Right Wing.
Marko Mitrovic's Revs had won 7 of the nine home matches so far this season, going 7-1-1, and had a fairly standard XI. Matt Turner started in net. Mamadou Fofana and Ethan Kohler were at Center Back. Matthew Polster at Right Back and Will Sands at Left Back completed the back four with Brooklyn Raines as the defensive midfielder in the 4-1-2-3.
Carles Gil (C) and Alhassan Yusuf were the Central Midfielders. Marcos Zambrano was at Left Wing, Dor Turgeman was at Striker and Peyton Miller was on Right Wing.
Atlanta United had most of the action in the Revs offensive third for the first ten minutes- including a sequence of three consecutive corners trying to get the ball past Matt Turner. But the first goal of the match came from the leading scorer in the history of the series.
In the 11th minute, Carles Gil picked up his seventh goal all-time against Atlanta United from 24 yards out. Cutting inside from the right at the edge of the 18-yard box, he shook off Tristan Muyumba who slipped on the play. Gil stepped back to beyond the arc and sent a curling, left-footed shot over the defense and past a screened Lucas Hoyos at the far post.
Atlanta United would challenge again in the 18th minute as Fafa Picault would work to the left side, alternating with Miguel Almiron, but his lead cross to Alexey Miranchuk was too far ahead of the target.
Revs striker Dor Turgeman would add another in the 36th minute to make it 2-0 for the home side. Alhassan Yusuf charged in from the right side of the 18. Sending in a pass toward the near post, the ball took a slight deflection off Fafa Picault. Turgeman beat Will Reilly to the ball getting it past Hoyos.
Two chances in the first 45 will stick with Atlanta United as missed opportunities- a Tristan Muyumba lead pass got Miguel Almiron behind the defense. Almiron's push of the ball past Matt Turner went off the near post without a second chance for United. Two minutes later, Almiron would send a shot from distance at Turner that he had to send over the crossbar to keep the score at 2-0.
The first half stats leaned Atlanta United's way: 8-4 in shots- Revs having the advantage on target 3-2. They also had twice as many touches inside the opponent's 18 (12-6). Recovery numbers were also there for United- 13-4 in tackles and 4-1 in interceptions forcing 13 defensive clearances from the Revs.
Once again, the one spot that mattered most belonged to the Revs at two goals to the good.
That would become three as Peyton Miller was the recipient of a Yusuf pass at the far post for an easy tap-in eleven minutes into the second half. A Cooper Sanchez pass was intercepted and Yusuf started the quick transition. He found Gil centrally who returned the favor toward the top of the 18. Yusuf spotted Miller at the far post to bury the chance.
Three became four as Jackson Yueill and Brooklyn Raines worked a quick one-two and slotted the ball past Lucas Hoyos in the 67th minute. Raines started with the ball 35 yards from goal, laying the ball back for Yueill. Raines found a gap between defenders at the edge of the 18 and Yueill sent the ball toward him for the easy marker.
Miguel Almiron would break the clean sheet for New England with his second goal this week in the 85th minute and United would end the weekend at the bottom of the table in the Eastern Conference.
Atlanta United goes to Philadelphia next weekend to take on the Union. Kickoff at Subaru Park is Saturday night, August 1 at 7:40pm.
