The result wasn't the one the U.S. Men's National Team wanted in its final tune-up before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but there was plenty to like from a 2-1 loss to Germany in the Coca-Cola Send-Off Match in front of a record crowd in Chicago.

While Germany ultimately found the winning goal, the USA showed resilience and confidence. The performance provided another sign that Mauricio Pochettino's side is ready for the challenge that awaits.

It only took Germany two minutes to find the opening goal of the match. The visitors earned a free kick a few yards outside the 18. Captain Joshua Kimmich delivered a dangerous ball into the box, where Kai Havertz timed his run perfectly and headed home the opener to give Germany a 1-0 lead.

The United States didn't let that moment hurt them, instead they responded.

The Americans settled into the match, matched Germany's intensity, and began creating chances of their own. Their pressing disrupted Germany's rhythm, and they refused to let the early setback define the game.

The equalizer arrived in spectacular fashion in the 37th minute.

Pulisic's corner kick was initially cleared by Germany's defense, but only as far as Antonee Robinson lurking outside the box. The U.S. left back took one touch and unleashed a stunning volley that flew into the back of the net, sending the Chicago crowd into a frenzy.

Robinson celebrated with a backflip before being mobbed by teammates as the United States carried momentum into halftime.

"Joke," Tyler Adams said. "I told him he's got to save that for next week, man. I don't want to be wasting those. But yeah, hell of a strike. He's going to help us big time in this tournament."

For Robinson, the moment carried even more significance.

"Just being here in general and being with the team, it's something that I wasn't quite sure was going to happen the way my year's gone," Robinson said. "To score a goal like that is is an incredible feeling, and I think everyone can see in how I celebrated and the emotions that came out there, you know, meant the world to me."

In the 57th minute, Havertz found space in the penalty area and slipped a pass to Leroy Sané, who finished clinically to restore Germany's lead at 2-1.

The Americans continued to push forward and created opportunities, but they could not find a second equalizer. Even so, the performance left players encouraged rather than discouraged.

"I was super excited to see the response of the team and the character that we showed, the resilience," said Adams. "I think for us, that's more important than necessarily the quality because I think that the quality is gonna come. We're gonna get in situations where guys are gonna get in positions, score goals, assist goals. But there's certain things that have to be intangibles in our team, and that's the character that we show, the energy that we bring, how combative we are, those types of things."

"We put on another good performance today. Obviously, the result didn't go our way in the end, but we created a lot of chances," said Christian Pulisic. "All in all, really positive from us against a good team."

For Adams, the match served as exactly the type of test the United States needed before the World Cup begins.

"It's important because I think when you can test yourself against the best, it's a good benchmark. I think for us to show that, you know, we could have scored a lot more goals, sure, we probably could have conceded more as well, but that's a heavyweight fight, said Adams. "That's exactly what you wanna see, and I think that's what The US needs to show."

The scoreboard will show a 2-1 defeat, but the bigger takeaway may be what the United States demonstrated throughout the evening.

This team can respond to adversity. It can battle with elite opponents. It can create chances against one of the strongest teams in the world. Most importantly, it showed the mentality and belief needed to compete on the sport's biggest stage.

With Paraguay awaiting on Friday in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the United States leaves Chicago with a loss—but also with proof that it belongs in the fight.
