3 ATLUTD Players, 3 Georgia Boys Called to USMNT Gold Cup Roster

by Bart Keeler

The U.S. men’s national team heads to Kansas City this month to play the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. Head coach Gregg Berhalter called up three Atlanta United players for his roster and three Georgia natives as well.

Goalkeeper Brad Guzan and defenders George Bello and Miles Robinson will wear the red, white, and blue this summer. All three have played for the USMNT before, but this is the first time they will be in a camp together. Bello and Robinson played in January but Guzan has not been with the national team since 2019.

Guzan, 36, started all six matches for the U.S. in the 2015 Gold Cup. He three of the four matches of the Concacaf Nations League group phase in 2019.

Robinson made the roster for the Nations League matches in October but did not see the field. He earned his first international start and scored his first international goal in January against Trinidad & Tobago.

This will be Bello’s first major senior international competition but did play in the 2019 U-17 World Cup. He played 26 minutes in the January friendly.

Bello is joined by two other Georgia natives on the roster: goalkeeper Sean Johnson of Lilburn and defender Walker Zimmerman of Lawrenceville. Both played at Brookwood High School.

The USMNT starts Gold Cup group play on Sunday, July 11, against a qualifying team. Players will not leave their clubs until July 5. That means all three ATLUTD players should be available for the match against Chicago on Saturday, July 3.
