Atlanta United 2 Clinches First-Ever Playoff Berth as Dunbar and Kovac Rewrite the Record Book
Three minutes into Decision Day, Andrew Jardines won a second ball in the attacking third, drove into space and found Cameron Dunbar on the left side of the box.
Dunbar's first-time cross needed one touch.
Arif Kovac supplied it, poking the ball home from point-blank range for his 20th goal of the season.
It was the connection that had defined Atlanta United 2's year, Dunbar would crete another goal before halftime, and Atlanta United got the win they needed, 4-2 over Orlando City B at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee on Sunday. The win jumped them from sixt
h to third in the Eastern Conference standings.
Third place means a home playoff match on Sunday, Oct. 18, the first postseason game this club has ever hosted. It also means Atlanta gets to pick its own opponent this week under a format that has become one of the league's signature wrinkles.
Atlanta and CT United FC were the only two Eastern Conference clubs to qualify for the postseason for the first time.
But getting there Sunday required more than the attacking production that has carried Atlanta for much of the season. It required figuring things out.
Three Goals Before Halftime, and an Answer Each Time
Orlando did not make it easy. Issah Haruna leveled the match in the 18th minute on a shot that had no business going in, curling the outside of his left foot from the right side of the box and beating Jonathan Ransom at the near post.
Atlanta answered. A scrambled own goal restored the lead in the 30th minute when Tristan Himes could only punch a Dunbar corner as far as Harvey Sarajian, with the ball deflecting off Sarajian's back and into the net.
Ten minutes later, Atlanta produced something much cleaner.
Jardines again drove through the middle and found Dunbar on the left. Dunbar worked his way toward the end line and cut the ball back to Ignacio Suarez-Couri, who opened his body and passed his finish beyond Himes.
It was Dunbar's 13th assist of the season, tying the all-time MLS NEXT Pro single-season record.
The movement was a variation on the opening goal, and another example of what Atlanta has become so good at doing: winning the ball, attacking quickly and finding Dunbar in positions where he can make the final decision.
Orlando still was not finished. Justin Hylton pulled one back two minutes into stoppage time, his shot deflecting off Dominik Chong Qui and past Ransom to make it 3-2 at the break.
It was a wild first half.
Atlanta had shown why it entered Decision Day as one of the league's most dangerous attacking teams. It had also given Orlando two openings that kept a match Atlanta had largely controlled from ever feeling comfortable.
With Orlando fighting for its own playoff life and results changing around the Eastern Conference, 3-2 hardly felt secure.
Chong Qui Slams the Door
The moment Atlanta needed arrived in the 63rd minute, and this time there was no combination required.
Ransom's long ball out of the back bounced into space after Orlando failed to deal with it. Chong Qui collected it, drove at Landon Okonski and took over from there.
A fake put Okonski on the ground. Chong Qui continued into the box with Himes charging toward him and calmly finished through the goalkeeper's legs. Atlanta led 4-2.
What followed was a different kind of test.
For much of this season, the story of Atlanta United 2 has been what this young group can create. On Decision Day, the final half hour became about whether it could manage something. Atlanta stopped chasing a fifth goal and started taking control of the match.
As substitutions changed the available personnel, the shape changed with them. Atlanta eventually shifted into a 4-4-2, with young players moving into unfamiliar combinations and responsibilities as Orlando pushed for the goal that might reopen the match.
They figured it out.
Atlanta conceded just four shots after Chong Qui's goal and did not allow Orlando to turn the final half hour into the kind of chaos that had defined the first 45 minutes. That might have been the most encouraging part of the afternoon.
The goals have been there all year. The individual talent has been obvious. What Atlanta showed Sunday was a young team capable of adjusting within a match, protecting a lead and understanding what the moment required.
That development has shown up individually, too. Players asked to expand their games throughout the season were trusted to do it with a playoff berth on the line. And when the moment arrived to finish the job, they did.
The Numbers Get Official
Following all of the league's Decision Day contests, MLS NEXT Pro made two of Atlanta's biggest individual accomplishments official.
Kovac won the league's 2026 Golden Boot. Dunbar was named Playmaker of the Year, becoming only the second player in league history to win the award.
Kovac's path to the top of the scoring table started quietly. He joined Atlanta United 2 in January 2025, made three substitute appearances that year and scored his first professional goal that September against Chicago Fire FC II.
This season, he made his first professional start in April against Inter Miami CF II and scored in it.
On May 16, Kovac produced the single most productive night any player has had in MLS NEXT Pro history, scoring five times in a 6-2 win over Huntsville City FC. He never really slowed down after that.
Kovac added 13 more goals over his next 19 appearances and finished the regular season with 20, the most prolific individual goalscoring campaign in Atlanta United 2 history.
Dunbar's arrival came ahead of this season after developing with the LA Galaxy, moving to Minnesota United, and then playing over 50 matches with USL Championship side Orange County SC.
He picked up his first two Atlanta assists in a March win over Huntsville and kept producing from there: 11 more assists and nine goals across his remaining matches, an eight-key-pass performance in an August draw at Inter Miami CF II that set a new team single-match record, and a league-leading 72 key passes for the season.
Between them, Kovac's finishing and Dunbar's creating produced 45 combined goal contributions, the most productive individual pairing anywhere in MLS NEXT Pro this season. They were the engine behind a regular season that produced the most wins, points, goals and assists in club history.
But Sunday also showed why this season has become about more than two record-breaking players.
Behind them is a group of young players that has grown together, learned different roles and increasingly earned the trust to solve problems in meaningful matches.
Last season, Atlanta United 2 reached Decision Day with a chance to qualify for the playoffs and came up one shootout short. This time, it did not leave anything to a shootout.
What's Next
Atlanta will find out its playoff opponent Wednesday when MLS NEXT Pro's Pick-Your-Opponent format returns for a fourth consecutive season.
As the No. 3 seed, Atlanta can select from the No. 5 through 8/9 seeds, with the Eastern Conference selection show airing live on MLSNEXTPro.com at 1 p.m. ET. Crown Legacy and Chattanooga will have the first two picks from the rest of the field, then Atlanta will make their choice.
Higher seeds will host throughtout the MLS NEXT Pro playoffs.
Before any of that, the league's first-ever Play-in Round will determine the final seed in each conference, with Red Bull New York hosting Huntsville City FC in the East during the weekend of Oct. 9.
Atlanta United 2 has never played a playoff match.
On Oct. 18, it will.
At home.
Against an opponent it gets to choose.
