Atlanta United adds another to their midfield, Mateusz Klich joins the Five Stripes

Mateusz Klich is on his way to Atlanta after a trade was completed with DC United today. Atlanta will send their first round pick in today's MLS SuperDraft to DC for the rights to Klich, while DC will keep a percentage of his salary budget charge and his Designated Player spot. DC will earn $50K in 2026 General Allocation Money if Atlanta signs Klich to a new contract.

“Mateusz is a central midfielder with proven quality both in this league and at the highest levels in Europe,” Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson said. “He’s had two quality seasons in MLS since joining the league in 2023. He’s a good chance creator, while also being able to dictate the tempo of a game from the middle of the pitch. We believe his qualities and leadership will be a good addition to our midfield.”

Klich will not occupy a Designated Player spot for Atlanta United. He will occupy a senior roster and international roster slot.

With 22 assists in 63 regular season games for DC United over the past two seasons, Klich will be a big part of Atlanta’s offensive strategy for 2025.

Prior to his time in our nation’s capital, Klich was a fan favorite at Leeds United. He was instrumental in Marcelo Bielsa’s system at the club, contributing to 19 goals during the 2018-19 season that saw the team narrowly miss out on promotion. Overall, he played nearly 200 times for Leeds.

Klich is also a former international for Poland, representing his country 41 times, last appearing for them in the UEFA Nations League in 2022. He also played in World Cup qualifiers ahead of two different tournaments.

There were reports earlier in the offseason that Klich was linked to a move back to Poland to play for his first club Cracovia, but he will extend his stay in the United States instead by making his way to Atlanta.  EDIT: For the salary cap experts out there and to clear up previous reporting, Tom Bogert of Give Me Sport posted this clarification:
