The question for Atlanta United in the Twin Cities was: Could they build off the come-from-behind win at home against Red Bulls and take advantage of the momentum in the second match in five days?
Minnesota United and Atlanta United had the same amount of offensive output, but the standings in each conference told a different story: the Loons in the wild card discussion in the West, the Five Stripes trying to climb out of the basement in the East.
Minnesota United came into the match at an uncharacteristic 2-2-5 at Allianz Field in 2026. Drake Callender started in net. Anthony Markanich, Morris Duggan, Michael Boxall, and Jefferson Díaz were at the back under head coach Cameron Knowles. Tomás Chancalay, Owen Gene, Wil Trapp, and Bongo Hlongwane were the midfield left to right. Joaquín Pereyra sat behind Marcus Caldeira up top.
For Atlanta United, Lucas Hoyos was in net with Tomás Jacob, Stian Gregersen, Júnior Alonso, and Elías Báez at the back. Adrian Gill and Tristan Muyumba were alongside Cooper Sanchez in midfield. Miguel Almirón, Aleksey Miranchuk, and Fafà Picault were up top.
Atlanta hassled Minnesota United early with their press: the home team only has a 46-percent possession rate this season and has problems playing with their feet.
Tomás Jacob was active early in creation, interacting with Adrian Gill, then trying to spring Fafà Picault in transition with long-distance passing from the defensive half into the attacking third in the first 10 minutes.
Lucas Hoyos came up big in net with a save at the far post off a long throw in the 19th minute. The next possession, the Loons had an initial 3-on-1, but Bongo Hlongwane couldn't convert with the support.
To Atlanta's credit, they worked through the Minnesota United pressure and got shots on net when they were able to build up in the attacking third. Atlanta United ran more than half of their offensive work up the right channel, 54 percent, in the first 35 minutes of play.
Atlanta broke through off a corner kick in the 37th minute, and Tomás Jacob was the beneficiary. Tristan Muyumba shot from outside the arc, assisted by Elías Báez. The shot was blocked, spinning off to the edge of the 18-yard box on the near side. Jacob scored off the half volley and the outside of the right boot, a striker's finish the second time around, for the 1-0 lead on the road and his third goal of the year.
Atlanta United had more shots (7-5) at the intermission, though the one on target for the Five Stripes was the only one that mattered on the scoreboard. Defensively, Atlanta had more interceptions on the Loons' play (9-4) and clearances (13-4). Lucas Hoyos was credited with the one big save early on. The back line had 17 defensive actions in total in the first half, with Stian Gregersen and Tomás Jacob logging five each.
At the start of the second half, Miguel Almirón had an early chance against the keeper, but Drake Callender came up with the save to keep the margin at one. An early set piece for the Loons smacked the crossbar in return, a header, but Lucas Hoyos got the convenient carom to preserve the lead.
With 30 minutes to go, a second shot off the crossbar for Minnesota United ended up with the tying goal for the home side. Owen Gene's entry from the right side curled to the far post, and the sliding shot came off the crossbar behind Hoyos. Markanich got a touch after Picault as they both crashed the post, and the score was evened.
There was an initial thought from the Assistant Referee to raise the flag for offside after the ball went in the back of the net, but the call was wiped out and Markanich's fifth of the year stood.
An even match stayed that way until 12 minutes to go. A back pass from Steven Alzate didn't have enough pace after the initial touch. Lucas Hoyos came forward to save the play from becoming a Minnesota United goal, and just as quickly created a chance the other way as he claimed the pass.
Tristan Muyumba got the ball from Aleksey Miranchuk at the end of the transition play and put the lead goal in with his left foot. Both Hoyos and Tomás Jacob should get credit and mention for the creation of the entire play. Hoyos also saved another Markanich chance along the way to preserve the lead.
Atlanta United brought in as many centerbacks as were available for substitution in the last five minutes of the 90, including the team debut of Paulo Díaz.
Mauricio González had a late chance on a header inside the six off a Minnesota United corner kick that took the clock north of 90 minutes, with four minutes added. Minnesota United led in most categories with the exception of the one that mattered, as the Loons dropped to 2-2-6 in 2026 at Allianz Field in Saint Paul.
The defense for Atlanta United had more tackles (13-12), interceptions (19-5), clearances (28-6), and three Lucas Hoyos saves to preserve full points. The Five Stripes now have back-to-back wins and 18 points (5-12-3) on the season in the Eastern Conference.
The team at the bottom of the table in the Western Conference, Sporting Kansas City, now visits Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday night. The math for Atlanta United now leaves them only six points out of the play-in round of the postseason.
