A 23-yard free kick and a Muyumba rocket off the bench give the Five Stripes a result they badly needed.
Atlanta United headed to Toronto to take on Toronto FC for the Five Stripes' fifth match in fifteen days. For the Reds, it was the third match in eight days, all at home at the newly renovated BMO Field. TFC was also chasing an eighth match in a row without a loss, six of those previous seven at home.
It was an opportunity for the Five Stripes to build on the efforts from midweek against New England and apply them on both sides of the ball in a tough environment. All of this on a very cold, raw, rainy afternoon on the shore of Lake Ontario. Temperatures were in the 40s and the rain created difficulty all afternoon that both teams had to navigate.
One early question was answered when the lineup was released. With the Open Cup match in Charlotte looming, head coach Tata Martino went with six changes from the midweek, involving four homegrowns: Luke Brennan, Jay Fortune, Matt Edwards, and Cooper Sanchez as part of his starting XI. Cayman Togashi got his first MLS start along with Lucas Hoyos in net, Elias Baez, Stian Gregersen, and Juan Berrocal at the back. Tristan Muyumba was in the midfield and Alexey Miranchuk was in the attack.
For Robin Fraser, Toronto FC started Luka Gavran in net. Zane Monlouis, Alonso Coello, and Kobe Franklin were holdovers at the back from the 3-3 draw with Philadelphia in the midweek. Daniel Salloi, Jonathan Osorio, and José Cifuentes started in the midfield with Josh Sargent up top. Benjamin Kuscevic, Emilio, and Raheem Edwards also started as Fraser made three changes.
Walker Zimmerman and Richie Laryea were not in the matchday 20. TFC Republic's John Molinaro reported that Zimmerman was out anticipating the birth of his third child.
For the first ten-plus minutes, both teams tried to figure out the pitch conditions on a raw, cold, and rainy day. Atlanta United registered the only shot and had two corners to try and get the offense kick-started.
Alexey Miranchuk caused problems for the Toronto defense early. In the 17th minute, he waited for runs into the attacking third by both Cayman Togashi and Jay Fortune. He chose Fortune, but the pass at the top of the arc resulted in a shot that climbed well wide.
On the subsequent possession, Toronto got their first real chance. Emilio chipped to the far post from inside the Atlanta 18. Daniel Salloi tracked the ball down in a scramble inside the 6, but the chance was eventually cleared.
Toronto FC absorbed two injuries that forced substitutions. Benjamin Kuscevic tried to shield Togashi on a run in the 19th minute, went down, and was replaced by Lazar Stefanovic. José Cifuentes suffered an undisclosed injury ten minutes later and was replaced by Derrick Etienne Jr.
In between those stoppages, it appeared Atlanta United had scored the opening goal. Starting with Lucas Hoyos, Miranchuk connected with Togashi at the edge of the Toronto box. Cayman won his battle with Zane Monlouis and chipped Luka Gavran for a ball in the net. VAR ruled Togashi offside.
On the play, Togashi had issues getting back on his feet, focusing on his right ankle. He received treatment as the goal was under review and stayed through the subsequent kickoff, but he yielded to Latte Lath after 25 minutes.
Atlanta United had more chances than Toronto until just before halftime. Matt Edwards tried to play out of pressure, but only Emilio was in his passing lane inside the Atlanta 18. Elias Baez rescued the attempt by the home team to keep the match goalless into seven added minutes. United was on the front foot in the fourth and fifth minutes of added time, their pressure creating windows but no shots on target.
Atlanta finished the half with four shots to TFC's two, neither team with a shot on target. Three key passes came from Atlanta United, along with twice as many touches inside the opposition box as the home team.
There had been a thought that substitutions were coming into the second half with the Open Cup match in Charlotte a few days down the road. Both sides stuck with the XI that exited the field at the break.
Two minutes into the second half, Jay Fortune was spun down just outside the arc by Josh Sargent. From 23 yards out, Alexey Miranchuk curled the ball over the four-man wall and past a diving Luka Gavran into the upper 90.
The goal for the Smooth Operator was his fifth of the season and the first road goal for Atlanta United in 2026.
With the lead, Atlanta worked down the right side involving Matt Edwards and Cooper Sanchez two minutes later. There was a moment of concern six minutes after that as Derrick Etienne Jr. seemed to clear out Elias Baez to maintain TFC possession as the home team gained control.
Josh Sargent was awarded a foul in a back-and-forth with Tristan Muyumba, but the set piece from Alonso Coello curled just wide of the near post.
In the 67th minute, Atlanta United added a second on a true team build-up. Cooper Sanchez charged through the middle of the pitch into open space.
His pass to recent substitute Fafa Picault was backheeled to Tristan Muyumba, whose first touch rocketed past Gavran for a 2-0 lead.
With less than twenty minutes to go, Kobe Franklin served a ball to Emilio, whose header stayed high and got under the crossbar to close the margin to 2-1.
Atlanta United made their final subs with MatÃas Galarza and Will Reilly coming in for Sanchez and Miranchuk, who wore the captain's armband on the afternoon.
The control that Toronto exerted early in the second half was clawed back in the final ten minutes as the Five Stripes made the home team do all the work.
The Reds had a few chances late. One went into the back of the net from Jules-Anthony Vilsaint in the 85th minute, but the near-side AR raised his flag for offside to take away the apparent equalizer.
The six added minutes yielded a number of corners and a Luka Gavran cameo upfield as Toronto went 11v10 in search of a goal. The last corner came north of the 96th minute and sailed over everyone inside the box. The final whistle ended Atlanta United's four-match losing streak.
Atlanta dealt with Toronto FC's pressure over the full 90 minutes and the early adversity of losing Cayman Togashi to injury. What Tata Martino had been asking for showed up on the road in a difficult environment. The task now is to take those lessons from the road trip and apply them to the Open Cup matchup in suburban Charlotte.
Toronto FC outshot Atlanta United 9-6, with each team putting two on target, but United had more passes completed in the final third (83-59) and more long ball completions (28 to 16). Lucas Hoyos made the only registered save of the afternoon.
Tristan Muyumba and Alexey Miranchuk graded highest for United. In addition to their goals, Muyumba registered in six different defensive categories, winning all four tackles and going 6-of-10 on duels. Miranchuk registered in four defensive categories and created problems for Toronto late by disrupting shots on goal.
Next up is the opportunity to advance into the quarterfinals of the US Open Cup as the lead-off match in the Round of 16 on Tuesday night at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex in Matthews, North Carolina. Kickoff is slated for a little after 7 PM Eastern.
