ATLUTD Sends 2 Players to USMNT October WCQ Camp

by Bart Keeler

Atlanta United will again send defender Miles Robinson and Geroge Bello to represent the U.S. men’s national team in this October World Cup Qualifying window. Head coach Gregg Berhalter today named 27 players for his roster for the three-match camp spanning Sunday, Oct. 3-Thursday, Oct. 14.

Robinson, a 24-year-old centerback, has 12 caps and three goals for the USMNT. He quickly rose to the top of the positional depth chart with strong showings in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. His header in the 118th minute defeated Mexico in the final.

Bello, 19, received his first call-up in January. He also proved his worth at left-back in the Gold Cup, starting two matches.

Both Robinson and Bello played in the September window. The centerback started and played the entirety of all three games. The left-back only started in the match against Honduras on Sept. 8 and was subbed off at halftime.

Two other Georgia-born players will join the Atlanta United pair. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson and right-back Shaq Moore will join the camp. Johnson was called into September’s camp after Zack Steffen tested positive for COVID-19. Moore was a central figure in the Gold Cup as well.

USMNT October Schedule:

  • Thursday, Oct. 7, vs. Jamaica, 7:30 p.m. ET, Q2 Stadium, Austin, Texas

  • Sunday, Oct. 10, at Panama, 6 p.m. ET, Estadio Rommel Fernandez, Panama City, Panama

  • Wednesday, Oct. 13, vs. Costa Rica, 7 p.m., Lower.com Field, Columbus, Ohio

Despite taking five points in September, Berhalter and the team are under pressure to improve their on-field performance. Currently sitting in a qualifying spot, the team should be able to take advantage of two home matches in September.

After just three of 14 matches not much separates the eight teams in the final round of Concacaf Qualifiers. Jamaica is at the bottom of the standings with one point; Panama surprised many by winning five points in September; Costa Rica earned a disappointing three points.
