July 31 in Atlanta soccer history

  • 2011: The Atlanta Silverbacks Women won the USL W-League championship with a 6-1 win over the Ottawa Fury Women in Tukwila, WA

News:

  • 1968: Santos had to cancel their planned match in Atlanta against the Chiefs due to an injury suffered by Pele in Paraguay. Chiefs' VP Dick Cecil announced that the club was hoping to work with Santos to reschedule the match.

  • 1968: Ron Newman's contract was purchased by the Dallas Tornado. Newman took the opportunity to become a player/coach, which started a career on the touchline that led to championships with the Tornado (1971), Los Angeles Skyhawks (American Soccer League, 1976), and 10 Major Indoor Soccer League trophies with the San Diego Sockers. He was the first manager of Sporting Kansas City in MLS (then the Kansas City Wiz and Wizards) from 1996-1999. His legacy in Atlanta was being the VP of the Chiefs' Y-League which saw youth soccer participation grow from 150 boys in 1967 to over 16,000 in 1968.

  • 1989: An Atlanta group led by Ron Terwilliger, president of Trammell Crow Residential, began the process of acquiring a franchise in the American Indoor Soccer Association. AISA commissioner Steve Paxos said, “Atlanta is one of the many groups that have realized that the AISA offers an outstanding sports franchise opportunity.”

  • 1997: The Atlanta Ruckus signed Richie Richmond and Frantz Jean-Louis. Richmond played for the Ruckus previously, and was a local star at St. Pius HS and Clemson University. Jean-Louis had experience with the Haiti national team.

  • 1997: Stone Mountain's Josh Wolff was named to the U.S. squad for the World University Games in Italy. He starred at Parkview HS before being named to Soccer America's All-Freshman team at the University of South Carolina.

  • 2019: MLS All-Star Game in Orlando at Exploria Stadium against Atletico Madrid. Atlanta United was represented by Josef Martinez, Brad Guzan, Ezequiel Barco, Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, and Pity Martinez.

  • 2020: Cubo Torres signed by Atlanta United on a free transfer after his contract at Club Tijuana ended. He was signed as an injury replacement for Josef Martinez, who was placed on the season ending injury list.
