Lowcountry Boil for Atlanta United in Charleston

by Madison Crews

Atlanta United goes on the road to face off against Charleston Battery in Round of 16 for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night.

In the Round of 32, the Five Stripes beat Charlotte Independence 3-0 to advance to the Round of 16. The 17's had the chance to see many new and upcoming players for the Five Stripes in the last round, and they will potentially see them attempt to step up big for Atlanta on Tuesday.

“Normally, in any club, the academy kids and kids from the second team, they bring the passion, that energy, that playing for the heart and all those things, and I think that is very important to always to remember it doesn't matter how many years you have as a professional, you have to have that kind of passion, and that's what they bring,” said Head Coach Gonzalo Pineda to media on Monday.

Charleston is currently in first place in the USL Championship, and are undefeated in the 2024 season. A 3-2 victory over South Georgia Tormenta pushed the Battery into the Round of 16.

This isn’t the first time that these two teams have faced off. The last time Atlanta saw Charleston was in the Open Cup back on June 13, 2019 where the Five Stripes won 3-1. In the series history, which have all been in Open Cup play, Atlanta has won the previous three matches.

“We need to be Atlanta United,” said Ronald Hernandez when asked what kind of game Atlanta expects on Tuesday and the team needs to do. “We need to be on the front foot. No matter if we are away or home, we always want to be on the front foot.”

You can listen to the match on 92.9 the Game where Mike Conti and Jason Longshore will have the call. The match will also be livestreamed on ussoccer.com.
