USWNT cruise, Messi shines: The Rundown, July 22

The USWNT comfortably defeated Vietnam in their World Cup opener last night. Sophia Smith scored the first two goals and assisted on the third from Lindsey Horan. The US outshot Vietnam 28-0.

For more reaction to the match, check out the Atlanta Soccer Tonight special after the match last night from 92.9 The Game:

Lionel Messi did not start his first match for Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup against Cruz Azul. He entered the match alongside Sergio Busquets and Josef Martinez early in the second half. The visitors equalized to make it 1-1 and it appeared to be destined for penalties before Messi did this...

Mazatlán was the only other team to earn three points last night, winning at Austin FC 3-1. Penalties were needed in the other matches which saw Orlando earn the bonus point at home against Houston and Charlotte earned the extra point on the road in Dallas.

León also earned the bonus point in Vancouver, but it was far from straightforward. It went through 19 rounds in the shootout and the visitors took the extra point 16-15.

Two inter-league matchups highlight the Leagues Cup schedule today as Xolos faces the Philadelphia Union and Pumas visits Stade Saputo to face CF Montreal. Portland hosts San Jose, RSL visits Seattle, and New England takes the short trip to New Jersey to face the Red Bulls.
