Carlos Bocanegra Launches Atlanta FC, a Youth Club Built on a Different Idea

Carlos Bocanegra built a career by competing against the best in the world. Now he is betting that American youth soccer needs less of the same and more of something it has rarely seen.
The club is built around a staff assembled from the highest levels of American soccer development and a model designed to offer something American youth soccer has rarely had: a deliberate, development-first environment where every player gets real attention.
The approach is straightforward in concept and meaningfully different in practice. Each age group fields one team. Each team has one dedicated coach. That coach is not splitting focus across multiple rosters or age groups. The design is intentional, and Bocanegra makes no apologies for how small it starts.
"Too often in youth soccer, players are forgotten about, late developers can be pushed aside, and families don't have a clear understanding of how their child is progressing," Bocanegra said. "We're building a unique environment at Atlanta FC where ambitious athletes receive consistent coaching, real attention to detail, and a clear path."
The credentials behind that conviction are hard to argue with. Bocanegra captained the U.S. Men's National Team for six years, wearing the armband in 64 of his 110 international appearances across two FIFA World Cups, two Gold Cup championships, and a famous victory over No. 1-ranked Spain at the 2009 Confederations Cup. He was the MLS Rookie of the Year and became the first player ever to win MLS Defender of the Year twice before spending a decade playing in the English Premier League, France's Ligue 1, and Scotland's Premier League. He is a National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee.
After retiring in 2014, Bocanegra built Atlanta United's sporting operation as Vice President and Technical Director, overseeing the academy, the development pathway, and a player portfolio that exceeded $100 million in transfers, culminating in the 2018 MLS Cup. He later co-chaired the Technical Development Committee at U.S. Soccer. Atlanta FC is his attempt to take that complete, lived understanding of the game and apply it at the earliest stages of a player's development, building the kind of environment he has always believed young players deserve and that Atlanta, in his view, is ready for.
"There are plenty of large clubs around the country, but we wanted to go a different route that allows us to maintain high standards and have quality control and vertical integration throughout the club," Bocanegra said.
In a conversation Monday, Bocanegra was direct about what drives the project. He is passionate about doing this the right way, improving the experience not just for the players but for the families around them. Parent involvement is not an afterthought in his vision. It is built into the structure from the start, with families kept informed through shared training plans, regular progress updates, and transparent communication about what is expected at every stage of development.
The staff backing that vision is notable. Liam Curran, who spent nine years at Atlanta United starting as Head of Academy Goalkeeping and ultimately serving as First Team Goalkeeper Coach, joins as Director of Goalkeeping. Curran currently also coaches goalkeepers with U.S. Youth National Teams. His Atlanta United tenure included the MLS Cup run, CONCACAF Champions League appearances, and a USSDA U-16 national championship. Before his time with the Five Stripes, he coached at Clemson, Akron, and Georgia Southern.
Dr. Ryan Alexander joins as High Performance Director. Alexander holds a PhD in Sport Physiology from East Tennessee State University and was the first full-time Fitness Coach and Sports Scientist for the U.S. Women's Youth National Teams. He supported the U-20 Women's National Team at the 2014 World Cup in Canada, then moved to the Senior Men's National Team in 2015 under Jürgen Klinsmann. In 2016, he became the founding Director of High Performance at Atlanta United, where he spent eight seasons contributing to both the 2018 MLS Cup and 2019 U.S. Open Cup.
Atlanta FC's four core values are respect, commitment, teamwork, and courage.
Tryouts for the inaugural rosters are scheduled for May 18 through 20 at Oglethorpe University's Salamone Soccer Field in Brookhaven. Players must register in advance, though walk-up registrants are welcome if they arrive at least 30 minutes early to complete on-site registration. U-8 through U-10 sessions run from 5:00 to 6:15 p.m. The U-11 through U-13 window follows from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Players are encouraged to attend all three days.
Bocanegra will join Atlanta Soccer Tonight on 92.9 The Game next Tuesday to discuss the launch and the vision behind Atlanta FC.
