When Atlanta United officially welcomes Elías Báez, they are introducing more than a young defender with upside.
They are adding a player whose career has been shaped by intentional investment, earned trust, and collective responsibility. From his earliest days as a youth prospect at San Lorenzo to becoming one of the most relied-upon defenders in Argentine football, Báez brings all of that now to Atlanta.
Atlanta United announced Tuesday that Báez has signed a contract through 2028, with club options for 2029 and 2030. The 21-year-old will occupy a U-22 Initiative and international roster spot, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
“Elías has emerged as one of the best young defenders in Argentina over the past couple of seasons and we’re pleased that he has chosen Atlanta United as the next step in his career,” said Chris Henderson, Atlanta United’s Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director. “He’s going to bring energy and toughness and fits well with our style of play. We look forward to welcoming him to the club and integrating him into our group.”
From Nearly Lost to Intentionally Backed
Báez’s story at San Lorenzo did not begin with inevitability.
As a teenager in the club’s youth system, he was a player San Lorenzo could have lost for free at one point. Deciding which players to retain and which to allow into the market from an academy, especially defenders in Argentina, is never simple and often results in players leaving the clubs they developed with in search of opportunity.
Instead, the club moved decisively, securing him with his first professional contract and later improving his terms. It was an early signal that San Lorenzo did not simply like Báez.
They believed in him.
That belief became the foundation of a carefully built progression from youth prospect to first-team regular, one rooted in development rather than shortcuts.
A Starter Made Through Trust
After debuting with San Lorenzo’s reserve side in February 2022, Báez steadily climbed the ladder. He made 20 appearances for the Second Team before earning his First Team debut in April 2024 against Defensa y Justicia.
From there, his role expanded quickly.
During the 2024 season, the left back made 28 appearances in all competitions, starting 15 of 17 league matches and appearing in two Copa Libertadores Round of 16 fixtures. It was a notable level of responsibility for a player still in his teens.
By 2025, that trust became unmistakable.
Báez started all 16 matches of the Apertura, plus three playoff games as San Lorenzo advanced to the semifinals. In the Clausura, he again started every league match, scoring his first professional goal against Atlético Platense and helping the club qualify for the playoffs in consecutive seasons.
Across the calendar year, he finished among the most utilized players in Argentina and was the only San Lorenzo player to log every minute of the Clausura. That detail underscores how completely coaches relied on him.
He did not rotate out.
He became an anchor for the squad.
The Defender: Disciplined, Durable, Modern
On the field, Báez is a defender shaped by responsibility.
Left-footed and positionally disciplined, he brings balance to the back line and composure in build-up. He is comfortable defending in space, reading danger early, and maintaining structure in transition. Those traits kept him on the field week after week in a demanding league.
Offensively, his growth has been measured rather than forced. Báez chooses his moments to advance, supports possession intelligently, and prioritizes the team’s shape over individual expression. His contributions, one goal and two assists at the First Team level, reflect timing and awareness rather than volume.
It is a profile forged by necessity, not freedom, and one that should translate well to MLS. In a league often defined by durability, Báez and his resilience should be a welcome addition to Atlanta United.
Togetherness Until the Final Whistle
What separated Báez at San Lorenzo extended beyond tactics.
Throughout his rise, he consistently emphasized unity, gratitude, and belonging to the fanbase in his public statements. Those themes appeared in how he spoke about teammates, coaches, and the group as a whole. That mindset carried through even as his move to Atlanta United took shape.
Despite the transfer being agreed, Báez remained connected to San Lorenzo. He trained with the squad, stayed present around the team, and watched matches from the stands as final paperwork was completed. It was a quiet but telling detail, a player who did not mentally leave before the chapter closed.
For supporters in Boedo, his departure is significant. Báez was not just developed at the club. He was intentionally kept, trusted, and relied upon.
Why Atlanta United Fits
Atlanta United’s pursuit of Báez reflects clarity of profile.
At 21, he fits the U-22 Initiative model, but his value goes beyond roster mechanics. He arrives with top-flight minutes, emotional maturity, and experience carrying responsibility in one of South America’s most demanding environments.
For Atlanta, he brings:
A defender accustomed to weekly accountability
Durability proven across full Argentine seasons
A mentality built on trust, preparation, and collective effort
This is not a signing driven by flash. It is driven by evidence.
The Next Chapter
Elías Báez leaves San Lorenzo as a professional shaped by expectation. He was secured early, trusted consistently, and relied upon until the final whistle.
He arrives at Atlanta United with that foundation intact.
When he steps onto an MLS field, supporters will see more than a new name. They will see a player whose story was written minute by minute, and who is ready to carry that responsibility into the next chapter.
