When Atlanta United officially welcomes Elías Báez, they are introducing more than a young defender with upside.

Atlanta United announced Tuesday that Báez has signed a contract through 2028, with club options for 2029 and 2030. The 21-year-old will occupy a U-22 Initiative and international roster spot, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
“Elías has emerged as one of the best young defenders in Argentina over the past couple of seasons and we’re pleased that he has chosen Atlanta United as the next step in his career,” said Chris Henderson, Atlanta United’s Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director. “He’s going to bring energy and toughness and fits well with our style of play. We look forward to welcoming him to the club and integrating him into our group.”
From Nearly Lost to Intentionally Backed
Báez’s story at San Lorenzo did not begin with inevitability.
As a teenager in the club’s youth system, he was a player San Lorenzo could have lost for free at one point. Deciding which players to retain and which to allow into the market from an academy, especially defenders in Argentina, is never simple and often results in players leaving the clubs they developed with in search of opportunity.
Instead, the club moved decisively, securing him with his first professional contract and later improving his terms. It was an early signal that San Lorenzo did not simply like Báez.
They believed in him.
That belief became the foundation of a carefully built progression from youth prospect to first-team regular, one rooted in development rather than shortcuts.
A Starter Made Through Trust
After debuting with San Lorenzo’s reserve side in February 2022, Báez steadily climbed the ladder. He made 20 appearances for the Second Team before earning his First Team debut in April 2024 against Defensa y Justicia.
From there, his role expanded quickly.
During the 2024 season, the left back made 28 appearances in all competitions, starting 15 of 17 league matches and appearing in two Copa Libertadores Round of 16 fixtures. It was a notable level of responsibility for a player still in his teens.
By 2025, that trust became unmistakable.
Báez started all 16 matches of the Apertura, plus three playoff games as San Lorenzo advanced to the semifinals. In the Clausura, he again started every league match, scoring his first professional goal against Atlético Platense and helping the club qualify for the playoffs in consecutive seasons.
Across the calendar year, he finished among the most utilized players in Argentina and was the only San Lorenzo player to log every minute of the Clausura. That detail underscores how completely coaches relied on him.
He did not rotate out.
He became an anchor for the squad.

On the field, Báez is a defender shaped by responsibility.
Left-footed and positionally disciplined, he brings balance to the back line and composure in build-up. He is comfortable defending in space, reading danger early, and maintaining structure in transition. Those traits kept him on the field week after week in a demanding league.
