Maddie's Version: Atlanta Took It From Them

Atlanta deserved the win. I really believe that.

The first half was difficult. Orlando scored in the eighteenth minute, and the way they play makes it hard to get comfortable. It is disorganized in this very specific, almost intentional way. Chaotic touches, unpredictable movement, no real rhythm to latch onto. They thrive in that kind of environment, and when Atlanta got frazzled by it, Orlando took their moment. Griffin Dorsey, a right back, stepped up and found the back of the net. That is the kind of thing that happens when a team plays that kind of game.
But after that? Atlanta was the better team. For the entire rest of the match, Atlanta was the better team.
You kept waiting for it. A goal is coming. It has to come. And then Matt Edwards made that little cutback on the right, found Jay Fortune, and that was it. Homegrown magic, connecting the dots. Those two came up through the academy together. They have lived together, been through everything together. They are brothers. And having that moment between them, in a match like this, was something special.
The equalizer almost had company. Alexey Miranchuk and Matías Galarza both had moments near the end that nearly gave Atlanta the three points. But the 1-1 was enough to carry the real meaning of the night.

Jay said it himself after: they all believed they deserved to win, and I agree with him completely. This was a team that bounced back. A team that took a punch and kept pushing. A team that, when it took risks and stepped into moments, showed exactly what it is capable of.
And now think about what this does heading into Tuesday.
Atlanta showed up and took something from Orlando that Orlando thought was already theirs. Orlando was content to wind the clock, sit on the one-nil, and go home comfortable. Atlanta took that away from them. So now Orlando walks into Tuesday physically tired and mentally drained, knowing they let a result slip through. That is a real advantage. Atlanta goes in with momentum, with belief, and with the upper hand.
Now, there is still a conversation to have about the attack. Twenty-two shots and only five on target. That cannot keep being the story. Atlanta found more moments in this match, but the finishing has to sharpen. In a knockout round, in an Open Cup, that is not optional. It has to happen.
And I will say this: the defense has actually been really solid. People are talking about it now, but mainly because the attack has been slow. That is where the real problem lives. The defense is doing its job. The attack needs to start doing the same.
Jay Fortune was the best player on the pitch tonight. He stepped up in this match and in the LA Galaxy match. He is doing exactly what you want from an eight. Alexey Miranchuk carried so much on his back trying to manufacture something, and that effort matters. But it cannot only be those two carrying it. Going into a win-or-go-home round, Atlanta has to find something more. From everywhere.
The momentum is real. The belief is real. Now go take Tuesday.
